If you haven’t planted your garden, there’s still time to get started. One way to help your garden thrive is by growing plants that attract hummingbirds or butterflies. Not only are they fun to watch, but they’re also natural pollinators that improve the health of your garden and rid it of pesky insects. Growing vegetables, fruits, and herbs is another excellent use of gardening space. There may still be time to plant some of your favorite crops - check out this growing calendar to determine the optimal time for planting.

The Kentucky Derby, known for its fancy hats, mint juleps, and “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” will take place on May 4th. This year’s event will be extra special – it’s the 150th Kentucky Derby race. Beginning in Louisville, KY, in 1875, the race has run annually since (despite delays in 1945 for World War II and in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic). Not watching from the grandstand at Churchill Downs? You can embrace the spirit of the race by hosting your own Kentucky Derby party! Check out these tips for throwing a memorable bash.

Small businesses are at the heart of our community, and you can recognize the ones that make an impact on you with National Small Business Day on May 10th. Why are small businesses so important? They create jobs in our community, contribute directly to the local economy, and add unique character to neighborhoods. There are more than 30 million small businesses in the United States, and they account for nearly 60% of all jobs. So, how can you make the most of celebrating small businesses on this day (and every day)? First, shop at small businesses! Then, take time to recognize them with positive reviews online. And last, don’t forget to tell your friends and family about the small businesses you enjoy supporting and why. Happy shopping!
